It’s getting close to game time. Tomorrow, the 24th, my e-short story—THE
VULTURE’S GAME-- goes on sale for 99 cents. That’s right—99
cents. It’s a look at a much younger Vincent
THE WOLF
and I think you’ll enjoy it if you give it a try.
Tomorrow
is a big day in so many other respects—my son Nick turns 28. He’s a fine
young man, hardworking, fun to be around, lots of good and close
friends. His mother did a terrific job raising him—while still holding
down several demanding jobs across the years. I love having him as a
friend and even more to call him my son. Happy Birthday, Nick!
Tomorrow is also the day I close on a new house. It has always been a
dream of mine to own a lake house and now that dream will finally be a
reality. As many of you know, the last few years have been difficult
ones culminating in the death of my wife Susan Toepfer on Christmas Eve.
She waged and ultimately lost a grueling two-year battle with lung
cancer. We were able to spend quite a few weeks together before the
situation ventured into deep waters and we talked about how important it
was to do all we wanted to do while we still could. Make those dreams a
reality. Treat each day as if it were special. Now while we can’t always
do that, we can sure try. As my wife and I traveled to Europe and
various other places during her illness, we talked about the lake house,
the vineyard we always wanted, the cities we always talked of visiting
but never did.
My life will never be the same without Susan—that much I know. But the
lake house is a big first step for me (for us, in many ways). And I hope
it turns out to be as special as I always dreamt it would be. Thank you,
Susan.
On a cheerier note, tomorrow night my friend of many years Kate White
(former editor of Cosmo) is out with a new novel and that is always good
news. She’ll be doing a signing in Manhattan at 6 p.m. at the Corner
Bookstore (Madison and 93rd). If you are in town—stop by. She will not
disappoint and it’s also a great store to visit.
We are a little over a month away from the official publication of THE
WOLF. I can’t wait for you to read it and let me know what you think.
It’s the first in a series and I’ve started writing the second
one—working title of THE WITCH—and the plan is for that one to be in
stores July of 2015.
In the meantime, I will be doing a full week of classes, panels,
signings and other events at Thriller Fest in New York from July 7-12.
It’s at the Grand Hyatt and if you’re around—come around. Every thriller
writer you can name will be there and there will be tons of goodies for
you to take home. It’s always a fun time and this year promises to be
the biggest one yet.
Since we last spoke The New York Rangers made it to the Stanley Cup
Finals but lost to the Los Angeles Kings. The games were close and so
much fun to watch. And now, it’s World Cup time and while my heart
always roots for Italy to win, I have been very impressed with the USA
squad. They somehow make it past Germany this week it can be a very
interesting Final 16.
We’ll talk again soon. Enjoy the soccer matches and the start of summer.
Hope you get a chance to try the short story (did I mention it only
costs 99 cents?) and each of you stay well, safe and thank you for your
support all these years.
